What Went Wrong
Social platforms began as places to keep up with people we knew. Over time, friendship became secondary to reach, recommendations and time spent on screen.
Your attention became the product.
The longer you stayed, the better the platform performed — whether or not that time made your life better.
Slate begins with a different question:
What would a social network look like if its success depended on helping you stay close to people, rather than keeping you online?
We think it would feel smaller, quieter and far more human.
NO ADS.
NO ALGORITHMS.
NO AI CONTENT.
THE FEED ENDS.

Most social media celebrates how much time you spend.
Slate celebrates how little you need it.

Ten principles for a social network that knows when to stop.
Technology exists to connect people, not replace them.
Slate should never succeed by taking more of your time.
No engagement ranking. No recommended strangers. No hidden agenda.
Human moments belong here. Artificial content does not.
Relationships matter more than audiences.
Meaningful communities do not need to be endless.
You should understand how the product works and why decisions are made.
Your life is not raw material for an advertising profile.
Every design decision should help you leave feeling connected, not consumed.
Our favourite user experience happens away from the screen.
If a feature violates these principles, we will not build it.
